Catherine J. "Katie" Burkhart

Catherine J. “Katie” (Roop) Burkhart, age 88, of Marion, passed away Monday, February 19, 2018 at Colonial Oaks Health & Rehabilitation Center, Marion, Indiana.

Katie was born August 22, 1929 in Jay County, Indiana to the late Charley and Myrtle (Shefer) Smiley.  She married Charles W. Burkhart November 11, 1981 and he preceded her in death February 21, 2016. 

Katie worked for the City of Marion, County and City Government offices and the State of Indiana as a State Driver Examiner.   She had also worked at the Clerk’s Office and Voter’s Registration and was active in the Democratic Party.  She also sold Avon and arts and crafts for many years and loved going to craft fairs.

She was active in Christmas City U.S.A. and a member of the Amvets Post 5, the Marion Moose Lodge and the American Legion Redkey, Indiana.  Katie loved to play BINGO, Yatzee and cards.  If you couldn’t find her at home, she was at Wal-Mart!!!  Katie most enjoyed spending time with her family and her pride and joy was her great-granddaughter, Janessa.

She is survived by two sons, Michael Stanton and Thomas Roop, both of Marion; two daughters, Gloria (Mark) Cook and Cathy Wolfgang, both of Marion; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Ann Stanton; 5 brothers, and 3 sisters.

Friends and family may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 22, 2018 and from noon to 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 23, 2018 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 W. Kem Road, Marion, Indiana.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 23, 2018 in the funeral home with Reverend Mark Hummel officiating.

Burial will follow in Grant Memorial Park Cemetery, Marion, Indiana.
