Joe C. Sawyer, born on December 25, 1924, in Independence, Virginia, passed away peacefully on May 16, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana, going to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He is remembered as a dedicated leader in the Wesleyan Church and a cherished member of his community.
As the General Secretary of Evangelism and Church Growth for the Wesleyan Church, Joe devoted his life to spreading faith and nurturing the growth of the church. His tenure as District Superintendent for two districts of the Wesleyan Church showcased his commitment and passion for service, leaving a lasting legacy in the congregations he influenced.
A proud United States Army Veteran, Joe served as a pharmacy technician with the 49th Field Hospital during World War II, an experience that shaped him into the compassionate leader he became. His dedication to service continued beyond his military career, particularly through his work as a founding member of the first Wesleyan Church in Texas in the early 1950s, a significant achievement that demonstrated his vision and commitment to spreading the gospel.
Joe was a member of Calvary Community Wesleyan Church in Johnson City, New York, where he fostered a spirit of community and faith among congregants. His legacy extends to the many lives he touched through his leadership, mentorship, and unwavering support.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lois Sawyer; his son, Gary (Diane) Sawyer; four grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Joe is preceded in death by his parents, Harrison Sawyer and Virginia Sawyer; his first wife, Bethel Sawyer.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Church, 9709 Allisonville Rd. Indianapolis, Indiana 46250 on May 31, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. A graveside service will be held on May 31, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Grant Memorial Park Cemetery in Marion, Indiana. The family invites all who knew Joe to join them in celebrating a life well-lived, marked by faith, service, and love for family.
