John Thomas "Tom" Trotter Jr.

John Thomas Trotter Jr. (Tom) passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026, surrounded by the love and care of those closest to him. He was born on June 30, 1953. Tom spent much of his life in Marion, Indiana, where he built lasting friendships and became a familiar face to many.

Tom was a proud United States Navy veteran and carried that pride throughout his life. He owned The Parakeet, a bar in Hartford City during the 1980s, before spending more than 20 years tending bar at Waylon's and later retiring from bartending at the Eagles. Through the years, Tom became more than a bartender. He became a friend, a listening ear, and someone people always enjoyed seeing.

Tom was a one-of-a-kind person who will be remembered for his stubborn streak, kind heart, and quick wit. He always had a funny, smart comeback ready and had a way of keeping people on their toes. Those who knew him will smile when they remember just how ornery he could be.

He enjoyed music, sharing a cold beer with family and friends, and catching up with the people he loved. Tom found joy in the simple things, including wood carving from his recliner, loving his cat, Ghost, never forgetting his beloved dog, Zip, and proudly keeping up with his grand puppies. Those grand pups knew Tom always had a special place for them, especially since he was known to keep Beggin Strips in his pocket ready to share.

Tom is survived by his children, John Thomas Trotter III and his partner, Heather Murphy; Shay (Trotter) Nichols and her husband, Ryan Nichols; and Seth Trotter and his wife, Kaylani Trotter. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Madison, Mason, Holli Noelle, Kahleah, and Jett.

He is also survived by his siblings, Diane (Trotter) Denney, Allen Atkinson, and Kyle Atkinson, as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends whose lives were touched by his friendship and sense of humor.

Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirley (Lowe) Trotter; his parents, John Thomas Trotter Sr. and Etta Mae (Kindle) Atkinson; his stepfather, Bob Atkinson; and his siblings, David Trotter and Kathy (Trotter) Hanlon.

Tom chose cremation, and his ashes will be laid to rest alongside his beloved wife, Shirley, at the Marion VA National Cemetery.

A visitation will be held on Monday, July 27, at Raven Choate Robinson Funeral Home, 1202 W Kem Road, Marion, IN 46952, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a service to follow at 4:00.

Tom was never one for being overly formal and was happiest being himself. Those who knew him knew his love for a good Hawaiian shirt. In honor of Tom and the joy he brought to those around him, friends and family are encouraged to wear their favorite Hawaiian shirt as a way to celebrate his life and the personality that made him unforgettable.

Tom's wit, stubbornness, stories, and unmistakable personality left an impression on everyone who knew him. He will be remembered with love, laughter, and more than a few stories that begin with, "That was just Tom."
