Lila Chenal Milford, a beloved wife to Robert, devoted mother, cherished grandmother, and esteemed member of her community, passed away peacefully on December 7, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on December 29, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan, Lila lived a life marked by boundless energy, inspiration, and a profound love for her family and friends.

As a dedicated homemaker, Lila and Robert raised ten children, nurturing them with the same passion and vigor she brought to every aspect of her life. She is survived by her children, Kari (Kyle) Persinger, Esta (Raymond) Seach, Alice (Gary) Johnson Bisanz, Paul (Debbie) Milford, Todd Milford, Lucia (David) Hale, and Marguerite (Greg) Ritchey; twenty-three grandchildren; and thirty great-grandchildren, with three more on the way. Her legacy will continue to shine through the many lives she touched.

Lila’s life was enriched by a deep curiosity and love of learning. An avid reader and enthusiastic traveler, she proudly displayed nine passports filled with stories of adventures near and far. Her commitment to personal growth was reflected in her academic accomplishments, including graduation from Trinity High School in River Forest, Illinois; St. Mary’s College in South Bend, Indiana; and the Institute Schifanoia in Florence, Italy.

A gifted artist, Lila, earned admiration for her expressive and creative work. She remained deeply involved in her community throughout her life, serving as State President of the American Library Trustee Association and holding numerous positions on the national library board. She was also an active member of the State Board of the Garden Club, Marion Philharmonic Orchestra, Humane Society, Portfolio Club, Research Club, and Grant County Art Association. Her previous service on the St. Paul’s Parish Council reflected her enduring commitment to her faith.

Lila’s vibrant personality and zest for life made her an inspiration to all who knew her. She was cherished for her warm spirit, her captivating stories, and the unwavering love she shared so freely. Her enthusiasm will be profoundly missed, and her memory will forever remain in the hearts of her family and friends.

She is reunited in heaven with her husband Robert, her sons Jerome, Robert, and John, and her granddaughter Lucia.

A visitation will be held on December 15, 2025, from 10:00–11:00 AM, followed by a Mass at 11:00 AM at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1009 West Kem Road, Marion, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, Lila requested that a Mass be offered in her name or that contributions be made to a charity of your choice.

Lila Chenal Milford has gone home to her Lord Jesus Christ, leaving behind a remarkable legacy and countless cherished memories that will endure forever.
