Mildred H. Hinkle

Mildred H. Hinkle, age 87, of Marion, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2016.

Mildred was born in Bolivar, Pennsylvania on June 27, 1929, to the late Oliver and Lydia (McClellan) Henderson. She graduated from Bolivar High, and received a bachelor's degree in political science from Westminster College, and later received a master's degree in education from Ball State University.

Mildred will be known for her originality and energy when it came to teaching techniques, her furry slippers in the classroom, her high level of intelligence, her great sense of humor, and an unparalleled degree of stubbornness. Few topics were off the table but she loved to debate politics and explain to anyone with an opposing view the error of their ways. But most of all, she will be remembered for her dedication and character that was evident in all her endeavors. She will certainly be missed by so many.

Mildred was married to Charles Jarrell for 17 years. She married Dale Hinkle in 1973. They were married 22 years until his death in 1995. Mildred enjoyed a 26 year teaching career with Marion High School. She taught government, sociology, and psychology. She was dedicated to her students. She was actively involved in local and state governments, and was a member of the Indiana State Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church for over 50 years and served on numerous committees. She was also a member of the Women's Department Club and several other civic organizations. Socially she enjoyed the Red Hat Society and Winter Dance Club.

Mildred is survived by her children, Chuck (Kathy) Jarrell of Indianapolis, Diana (John) Burke of Mesa, AZ, and Stephen (Teresa) Jarrell of Marion; step-children, Virginia Rogers of Rolla, Missouri, and Sue (Dave) Powe of Fort Wayne; grandchildren, Amy (Jared) Pinkus of Indianapolis, Samantha (Bobby) Shepherd of Indianapolis, and Ryan (Isabella) Jarrell and Spencer Jarrell, both of Marion; step-grandchildren, April (Tom) Evers of Rolla, Missouri, Michael (Susanna) Hinkle of New Mexico, Joel (Mayumi) Carboni , Matthew Carboni, Patrick Murray and Regan Erny; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Mildred was also preceded in death by her husband, Dale Hinkle, sister, Gladys Super, two brothers, Donald and Edwin Henderson, and her great-grandson, Benjamin Jarrell.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 16, 2016 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1100 W. Jeffras Avenue, Marion, Indiana.

Burial will immediately follow funeral services in Gardens of Memory, Huntington County, Indiana.

Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 15, 2016 in Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to Headwaters Counseling, 2712 South Calhoun, Fort Wayne, IN, 46807; Westminster Presbyterian Church children's programs, 1100 W. Jeffras Avenue, Marion, IN, 46952; or Marion-Grant County Humane Society, 505 South Miller Avenue, Marion, IN, 46953.
