Roger T. Ertel, a beloved member of the Grant County community, departed this world on June 19, 2025, in Kokomo, Indiana, at the age of 79. Born on April 11, 1946, in Marion, Roger dedicated his life to serving others, imbuing every role with love, care, and an unwavering spirit of camaraderie.
A multifaceted individual, Roger navigated numerous professions throughout his life. He was the heart and soul of Ertel and Son Welding, where his craftsmanship and dedication reflected his commitment to quality and community trust. In addition, he served as a corrections officer with the State of Indiana, a role demonstrating his steadfastness and dedication to public service. In his later years, he immersed himself in small engine repair, perpetually finding joy in turning the seemingly broken into something functional once more.
Roger’s contributions to his community extended beyond his professional endeavors. A proud veteran who served as an MP in the United States Army, he carried the values of discipline, integrity, and honor throughout his life. His warm personality made him an accessible friend to many. He was celebrated for being a loving and caring father, grandfather, and friend. To his grandchildren, he was simply "Pops," an affectionate title embodying the playful spirit he shared in their adventures. Together, they crafted countless memories filled with laughter and shenanigans, each moment a thread woven into the rich tapestry of family lore.
Roger's love for the natural world was evident through his affection for animals, which included his adored miniature donkeys, Mort and Jill, the delightful Quackers the duck, and his loyal dog, Heidi. They filled his days with joy and companionship. Additionally, his passions found outlets in hobbies such as fishing with his children and grandchildren, tending to his garden, and indulging his fondness for Allis Chalmers tractors and auctions. Moreover, he showcased his artistry through knife-making, adding a personal touch to his love of craft.
In matters of faith, Roger held the honor of having served as a former Bishop along with several other positions within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. These roles showcased his commitment to his beliefs and the well-being of his congregation, impacting many lives with his kindness and wisdom.
Roger leaves behind a loving family who cherished his presence. He is survived by his wife, Billie Ertel; daughters Nancy Ray Allen and Angela (Scott) Haley; sons William T. (Sarah) Ertel, Joseph Brock (Owais) Jamal-Ertel, and Chris (Jill) Ertel; and grandchildren Teresa Gamble, Rachel Gamble, Randy Gamble, Britny Crumpton, Tristin Allen, Mason Ertel, Aiden Ertel, William Haley, Scott Alexander Haley, Kylee Ertel, Connor Ertel, and Keegan Ertel, along with eight great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray Thurston and Martha Faye Ertel and one son, Roger Wayne Ertel.
The community is invited to gather in remembrance of Roger T. Ertel at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Marion, Indiana. Visitation will be held on June 24, 2025, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM, followed by a Funeral Service commencing at 5:00 PM.
Roger’s legacy resides in the hearts of those who loved him, and while he may have departed from this earthly realm, his spirit will continue to illuminate the lives he touched with his kindness and unwavering love.
