Bergen Cornett, age 82 of Jonesboro passsed away on Sunday, March 14, 2021 at Colonial Oaks Health and Rehabilitation Center in Marion.
Bergen was born on July 12, 1938 in Sassafras, Kentucky the son of the late Nezra and Dorothy (Combs) Cornett. He was a machine operator at SCM Paper retiring after 25 years of service.
Bergen was fortunate enough to have found love twice in his life. He married his first wife, Bertha McCoy and she preceded him in death on January 27, 1990. On May 18, 1996 he married Evelyn Rowland and she survives. Bergen bowled in a bowling league for 40 years at Crest Lanes and Plaza Bowl and although he came close, he never achieved that elusive 300 game. He was a former member of the Marion Moose Lodge and enjoyed fishing. Spending time with his family was one of his greatest joys. To say he was an avid Kentucky Wildcats fan is putting it lightly especially when they played Indiana. Bergen loved camping and watching his grandkids participate in their sports and never missed a game!
He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Cornett of Jonesboro; his step-mother, Ida Cornett of Maces Creek, Kentucky; two daughters, Sherri (Ken) Hinshaw and Robin (Michael) Gump, both of Marion; a step son, Craig (Casey) Newby of Gas City; a brother, David (Susan) Cornett of Kentucky; a sister, Gwendal Martin of Kentucky; two step-sisters, Brenda (Gary) Fields and Carolyn (Emmitt) Roper of Kentucky; a sister-in-law, Sharlene Cornett of Marion; 8 grandchildren, Kala Simmons, Jared (Sarah) Burnett, Jason Burnett, Austin Aughinbaugh, Jay Jones, Trey Jones, Madison Gump and Kaiyah Jones; 6 great-grandchildren and one on the way.
Friends and family may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 W. Kem Road, Marion, Indiana, and from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 18 at the funeral home prior to funeral services.
