Robert John Leighty

Robert John Leighty, age 87 of Marion, passed away on Tuesday, September 14, 2022 at home.

Bob was born on April 13, 1935 in Fowler, Indiana the son of John and Goldie (German) Leighty.  He married Sharon (McFall) on June 18, 1958.

As a very young man Bob was an accomplished roller skater, dancing to music with his lovely sweetheart Sharon.  He was also involved in the sport of hunting which lead to his becoming a marksman and gaining his sharpshooting medal in the United States Army.  Bob honorably served his country from 1957-1963. He actively served in Germany and later in the Reserves.

Bob started his career at United Parcel Service as a delivery driver and then progressed to Center manager at the Marion UPS location.  Later, to remain in the area, he confidently went on to start his own business, Leighty’s Seamless Guttering in 1977.

Bob was also a life-long fisherman.  Enjoying the sport with his buddy, Ernie Fisher, he made trips to Canada, Florida, Utah, Minnesota, Texas, and, of course, knew all the best fishing spots in Indiana. Bowling was another favorite activity. He enjoyed the comradery and finally after 40 years achieved the accomplishment of a 300 game in 1990.

His biggest joy was his family.  Those remaining to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, Sharon of Marion; his children, daughter, Kipp (Jeff) Hyatt of Kokomo, and son, Dr. Chad (Sandy) Leighty of Marion.  He was greeted in Heaven by his oldest daughter, Kelly Combs.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew (Laura) Hyatt, Tory (Bryson) Minix, Lauren Tinkel, Krista (Julian) Black, Emily Hendrickson, Kyndra Combs, and Jenna Combs; six great-grandchildren, Leighton Tinkel, Jackson and Finn Robert Hyatt, Jameson and Penelope Minix, and Olivia Black; his sister, Betty Musser, and sisters-in law, Patricia (Dave) Arslanian, and Millie Brost.

Visitation will take place from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at Raven-Choate Funeral Home, 1202 W. Kem Road, Marion, Indiana.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 23, 2022 at St. Paul Catholic Church, 1009 Kem Road, Marion, Indiana.

Interment will follow at 3:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Fowler, Indiana.
